Back to School... Free hi-res download.

Should I feel guilty that I've been gone for five weeks and after almost a week back with the kids, I'm pumped for them to go to school? All of them. Even Canon, whom we lovingly call Canonball, started Montessori today. It was actually a little tougher dropping off Ava at kindergarten. Not emotionally tough, but tough to get a decent shot in betweeen the herd of parents and grandparents vying for that precious last look at their child before the teacher finally rams the door shut and says in a creepy voice to the kids... "now your all mine, mwaaa haa haa!" Just kidding moms.

Anyway, to asuage my guilt for enjoying alone time... I put up one of my favorite little kid pictures from the Another Testament series. New friends in diverse places.

Recently my life has been blessed by tons of new "friends".  Yes, facebook has opened a whole new world of insight and perspective. More diverse than the national languages on the site have been the Religious Languages. On my Reflections facebook page  I have people speaking Baptist, Pentacostal, Mormon, Catholic, Nondenominational, Church of Christ, etc... And yes, the languages are that distinct. But everyone is expressing the same sense of hope and faith. 

Another cool aspect of the page are the other communites that our Christian Art based page has tapped into. We have made friends with Jesus Daily, whom the New York Times just deemed "the most active page on facebook". Another new friend is The Christian Prayer Center.    Where Christians from all over the world go and ask people to remember them in prayer.

These connections have blessed my life and continue to let me share my work with more and more people. For those that have shared my work. I appreciate you.

Christmas in July.

 

 

OK. I've been saving this one for the half-way point. Marky has been scheming for at least 6 years on how to catch Santa. This year he succeeded. Here is some Christmas Eve fun. 

 

Visit to a Communist prison- video

 

This might sound crazy, but I’m in Romania right now. It’s the longest that I’ve ever left Tara and the kids. It hurts and I’ve only been gone for less than half of the time. 

I’m here working on my Masters Degree. My degree has nothing to do with the Romanian language. I suppose that I could have done a lot of Summer school and gotten the credits in Tempe. But, for some reason this didn’t feel right. 

So how do I reconcile leaving? Good question. In fact, I hadn’t even reconciled leaving as I kissed Tara goodbye at the airport. I left without conviction, just a little hope and a hunch. But amazing things happen with distance. 

I had to find purpose to justify my absence and the expense of doing this. 

Prior to leaving one of my professors told me about a Catholic Priest named Vladimir Ghika. He lived as a Saint and died in a political prison due to his unyielding faith and a system (communism), that hates God. 

I was in a hurry to meet with different intellectuals, historians, and know-it’s in Romania when I got here. There were answers I wanted about Ghika... Facts about his life. I’m working on writing one of the first things ever about him in English (it’s mostly in French, Romanian, and Italian to this end). 

But somewhere in looking for one answer, I started to find others. I discovered a class of people in Romania, the intellectual class. As a group, they lean harder to the right than most conservatives I know. Their conservatism isn’t mixed with political pressures and certainly isn’t tied to a particular candidate. It’s tied to love of the light and knowledge of the dark. In English, love of freedom and hatred of oppression... socialist, communist, or oppression by any other name. 

I’ve had the honor to sit with former political prisoners, leaders of Romanian culture in it’s pre-communist form. 

I hope you enjoy my questions and answers... I apologize in advance for any lack of quality in the videos I’m making (especially the audio!). It certainly would be a different situation if I had some of my talented friends with me. Maybe someday soon.

Jefferson... behind the scenes stills.

Monticello was fantastic. In fact all of these images were taken over a year ago on an evolving project about America's founders and the roll that their faith played (and didn't play) in the foundation of our country. I was lucky to be a tag along on that film project, meaning I didn't produce it. Lee Groberg did. He is excellent. As soon as the documentary comes out I'll post.

In the meantime though... enjoy these promised outtakes.

For those of you that got my mailer, you saw this, but just in case, here is a the first ever canvas we're releasing from this set. 

 

When Jefferson told King George III that it was time for the colonies to be free, already men and women were spilling their own blood for the cause. The war continued for around eight years. But, it’s interesting to note that freedom seemed to begin the moment they declared it, not just after the war was won. It was as if redemption had already been made the moment they decided to break their ties with tyranny. The feeling was so real that they wagered their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” to keep it.

As part of a Lee Groberg documentary about faith and America’s founders, I was invited to make pictures in some of America’s most historic locations.

This particular image was shot at Monticello, just off of Jefferson’s back porch. We were privileged to film throughout the night at this powerful place. Every square inch of the premises was an homage to the brilliance and depth of Thomas Jefferson’s mind.

The complexity of his mind thankfully gelled around one simple idea... Freedom.

Hi Everyone,

Location, Location, Location.

I've had a great time over the last few days looking for locations... Found this lone and dreary world today a little south of Prescott, AZ. We have a fantastic location for the Last Supper as well. Marko came with me on the scout, it was nice to have someone to whom I could dictate my texts. We also got a burger at the Chuckbox. We talked about Adam and Eve, school, football, and buying fireworks. Here are a few pics.

P.S. I've almost reached my decision on Adam and Eve, hang in there. Thank you for ALL of the pictures. Tough decision.

Update, last call for casting.

Hi Everybody, I'm working hard to review all of the pictures that people have sent me. I'm still accepting pictures for Adam and Eve and the Last Supper. We'll be shooting one day between June 20-23, TBA. The photography will take place in Arizona and is on a volunteer basis. I appreciate your help and interest. We've had great response. Please don't hesitate to sent something to me.

Just got back from my printer's, where I signed a bunch of new canvases... This is the first time I've ever printed this particular one. It's called "He Came Unto Them". The back story is kind of funny...

I took my son, Marky, who was seven-years-old and I gave him one of my cameras to carry around and take pictures. When we got home, I loaded all of the images into my computer... Marky’s and mine together. Marky claims that the original “Walking on Water” was taken with his camera. So, I guess this new version is mine. Here is a link to the super discounted limited offering.

 This is one of the very first prints. I'm going to be at Junky Trunk Boutique in Mesa, AZ tomorrow between 11-2 with a bunch of prints for sale. I can personalize them or whatever you'd like. We'll have a bunch of different images and canvas sizes.

Another Casting Call: Adam and Eve

Between June 20-23, I'm working on several images. One is the Last Supper (I'm still accepting volunteers). Another image that I'm working on is Adam and Eve post-expulsion from the Garden of Eden (so you'll basically be dressed- just to head off anyone's witty banter about being in the Garden). I'd love to cast a husband and wife. Please send me via Facebook or [email protected], a full body picture of both of you together, I want to see height. I have no other suggestions as far as look... I'll know it when I see it. Again, this is a volunteer thing, it'll hopefully be a good experience for those involved.
